Pearl was 15 years old and on her way to school on 25th May 2016 when she disappeared. A witness on the morning she disappeared reported seeing an armed man dragging a bleeding and screaming Pearl off a freeway overpass near her bus stop. An amber alert was issues and just the very next day, authorities spotted the car of her suspected kidnapper, 19 year old Fernando Castro, travelling south on Highway 101 north of Los Alamos. A chase began and after exiting the freeway Fernando opened fire at Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies. They cornered him in a Solvang neighbourhood. He died of a gunshot wound at the scene. The only man who had answers to Pearl's location is now deceased and there are still no clues as to where Pearl may be.

Pearl would now be 17, is described as 5ft 3, white female with brown hair dyed green and green eyes. She has a lower lip piercing and was last seen wearing a grey sweater, black leggings and had a black and turquoise backpack. A $10,000 reward has been offered thanks to donations that have been made for any information leading to her whereabouts. Tests that were carried out on Fernando's car found tiny drops of blood in the trunk and they belonged to Pearl. The amount of blood found is not significant enough to indicate that the injury was not survivable. As Pearl has not been found, investigators are optimistic that she is still alive and her older sister Rose believes that she could have been sold into sex trafficking.
